On May 2nd, everyone’s favourite web crawling neighborhood hero swung into theaters in The Amazing Spider-man 2: Rise of Electro. This time, Peter Parker faces his greatest battle yet and goes head to head with his former friend Harry Osborn, the new Green Goblin, and the deadly Electro.  While learning the truth about his parents and having to deal with strained relationships that suffer due to the existence of his alter ego, Peter must face the consequences of the life he has chosen to live and must overcome adversities like never before.

The movie did well at the box office, leaving the true battle to the critics. The most common critique was that due to the excessive number of sub plots, it was difficult for the audience to focus on one thing. Just the sheer number of villains — Electro, the Green Goblin and, briefly, the Rhino, was overwhelming. You would think that the producers  would have learned their lesson with the catastrophe  of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, which had the Sandman, Venom and Goblin Junior all in one film.

Despite its many flaws, the latest installment of the Amazing Spider-Man had an amazing cast. The acting of the leads, Andrew Garfield as Spiderman, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey and  Dane Dehaan as Harry Osborn, was amazing. A relatively new face in Hollywood, Dehaan gave a nuanced, heartbreaking performance that was met with such astounding praise that it would be a shame not to see him return in the next film. The special effects were spot on and should be watched in 3D in order to fully appreciate the excellent graphics.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out on Blu-Ray on August 19th. It is a movie you definitely don’t want to miss: it will leave you hanging to your seat with suspense right till the end.
