[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s we all know, the masjid (mosque) is a beautiful place. As soon as we take a step inside, we feel a sense of peace and tranquility. This feeling is not only present since it is the house of Allah (SWT)*, but also because it is the one place that we are sure to find a clean, healthy environment where we can worship Him.
Unfortunately, not much time is devoted to ensuring that the masjid is kept clean and decorated beautifully throughout the year. As we all know, the highly valued feeling of peace inside the masjid can quickly dissolve when we witness someone leaving their waste lying around, or when we have to brush aside someone else’s garbage in order to carry on with our worship. Many of us find it disrespectful, or a nuisance, yet we do not do anything to change this. However as youth, we do not always have to wait for the adults, we must take initiative ourselves from time to time. We can make a difference in improving the environment of our masjids, by educating others on the great importance of it.
We can diligently throw our waste out and any we see lying around, so that others can follow our example. In addition, we can kindly tell others to do so as well if we notice that they do not, instead of ignoring it, and making the problem worse. The Blessed Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Who so ever removes adhaa (anything repulsive or harmful) from the Masjid, Allah will make a house for him in Jannah.”
So Inshallah (if Allah wills), by taking a stand in improving the atmosphere of our masjids, we can become one step closer to achieving Jannah, as well as making our own distinct impression on society.
Cleanliness, however, is not the only aspect in beautifying our masjid. We often see our Christian neighbors decorating their houses for Halloween, Christmas, or other such events. We as Muslims can also decorate our masjid for events such as Ramadan or Eid. We can hang streamers and balloons, as well as hang up posters with important verses from the Quran to spread knowledge. This will make the atmosphere of the masjid more comfortable and welcome, as well as visually appealing.
So in conclusion, as the youth of our society we don’t have to stand by and watch this happen. We can take the initiative to keep our masjid clean, while getting involved and making a difference at the same time.
