In today’s era of technology it’s difficult for people to comprehend right from wrong. WW1 had a very similar predicament to what we are dealing with today. Although it may not have been in the same context the outcome bore the same ideologies. With technology advancing in warfare, it was not necessarily for the better.  If we look back to WW1 technology has evolved a lot. It used to be trench warfare, rifles, and fighting on the fields. Right in front of your eyes people were being shot to death. Now with modern technology thousands or even millions are killed with a click of a button.  The beginning of modern warfare began in WW2 when the Germans used chemical gases, sonar and radar technology to cause mass destruction. Now that we use drones in warfare it’s almost as if we are playing a video game. Although the destruction and death isn’t directly in front of us, people are still getting hurt and dying but it doesn’t emotionally affect us that much anymore. Because sometimes people don’t believe that what is going on in their phones and computers is real. What’s really going on in the world seems distant. For instance, in Syria, civilians are being bombed and executed by their leader Bashar al-Assad if they protest against him. The government has been attacking their own people for years and more than 500,000 people have been killed. The Syrian Civil War, Palestine- Israeli conflict, and Yemen Crisis has been going on for years but western media seldom addresses it. In these war torn countries weapons are used for two things destruction and resistance. Right now, Canada spends more than 25 billion dollars on military which is a relatively small number compared to the 598.5 billion dollars the U.S spends. But instead of spending money on new technologies that the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency is developing like, Project X. Project X is the new domain that DARPA is developing called cyberspace. Their goal is to create and understand the cyber territory, which will ultimately give them the ability to many large scale cyber missions. The technology can be exploited and be used as propaganda and espionage. Technology is now at that stage where it’s so advanced it’s hard to imagine what destruction new weapons can create. It may be the time for technological warfare to stop growing before it can cause any more damage than it already does. So, Canada and the U.S should use technology for something positive like reuniting families and use media to bring more attention to these conflicts.
