How Muslims Contributed to the Scientific World

Muslims shaped the world in many different ways. One of those ways was through Science. There is a high level of misconception and misinformation about Islam and Muslims. There is a gap between Muslims contributions historically and their current state. Muslim contribution to science has declined over the last three hundred years, which is not consistent with the historical Muslim contribution to Science and Society, in general. Muslims made some of the greatest scientific and mathematical discoveries in history. Muslims invented the number zero. A number that would revolutionize technology as we know it.

  Why were the Muslims able to progress the scientific endeavor? The Quran elaborately mentions Nature in its verses extensively and repetitively. “Behold in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are indeed Signs for men of understanding.” (Al Imran V 190). “Men who celebrate the praises of Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (with the thought): Our lord! Not for naught hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire”(Al Imran V 191). There are a lot of verses in the Quran that relate to Science. This gave the Muslims the basis to organize experimental knowledge.

  We heavily rely on computers as a whole in today’s society. We use them for everything. Starting businesses, creating websites and finding and starting youth programs such as My Voice Canada. Computers are like any other device in the world. Computers need code in order to work. Without code, computers would just be a large hunk of metal and glass. Computer Codes are 1’s and 0’s that make everything you see on a computer. This is called binary code and makes up any piece of technology you can think off.  Believe it or not, Muslims discovered the number 0. It is rarely acknowledged that Muslims invented 0. Muslims invented Algebra which is very important in many scientific and engineering fields.

  People should be very happy that Muslims exist. Muslims invented a lot of cures for diseases and scientific tools that caused the field of Science to grow. Muslims invented zero which is responsible for the invention of the computer.  It is my dream that Muslims will be active in the next scientific discovery.
